The FBI is looking into whether the St. Louis Cardinals hacked into the database of the Houston Astros, their formal National League Central division rival, to illegally obtain player data, as reported by the Washington Post. This cyber attack is believed to be the first of its kind against a professional sports team. There has reportedly been a breach of the Astros’ classified information regarding trade talks and player statistics. Major League Baseball has confirmed that this breach is under investigation.

MLB officials said that the breach is being taken seriously. The Cardinals confirmed that they are cooperating with the investigation but would not go into more detail. The Astros are also reluctant to comment until the investigation is completed. Although the Cardinals are one of the most popular baseball teams, their reputation is on the line. They have won the World Series 11 times, with their last title coming in 2011.
