Facebook announced recently, that they are developing their own drone that is capable of bringing internet to undeserved parts of the world. Testing will take place later this year in the US, but details are already emerging regarding the design. The wingspan will be similar to a Boeing 737, it will be able to remain airborne for 90 days at a time, it can fly as high as 90,000 feet and it will have the ability to offer internet speeds upwards of 10 gigabits per second.

The project is apart of the companies Internet.org program which focuses on bringing internet connectivity to parts of the world where such services are lacking. The creation of this drone will lead to more users which will likely result in a positive reaction from investors. Jay Parikh, vice president of global engineering and infrastructure for Facebook was quoted as saying this project should be considered as a “significant breakthrough”.
