Mastercard is conducting trials to test using facial recognition as a security mechanism for online purchases. They have developed a smartphone app for this purpose, and those who are participating in the trial can imitate the actions involved in selfie taking for authentication. There are skeptics who question whether this technology will work.

Even though the users can use a blinking to show they are authentic users, it is not foolproof because it has been spoofed before. But Ajay Bhalla who is an executive responsible for security for Mastercard is enthusiastic about its adoption in the market.

Mastercard is considering to introduce facial recognition as a security mechanism. The company currently uses SecureCode which uses a password as the security mechanism. According to the company, the SecureCode method was used to verify billions of transactions in the previous year.

The Chinese Shopping site Alibaba has dabbled in facial recognition but has not yet introduced it to the market. Mastercard is also exploring voice recognition and fingerprint security to approve online purchases.
