Dental Hygiene Month

December is a popular month for children to be National Dental Hygiene Month; possibly as a reminder of what so much sugar can do to one’s teeth. While most individuals develop 32 teeth in their adult age, the average American will lose seven of those teeth from diseases and decay; conditions that could easily be fixed with proper dental care.

The leading cause of tooth loss is cavities; unchecked bacterial growth leading decay of the teeth. Beyond just its significance to smiles, tooth decay is the leading chronic disease of the American public. While may be alarming, the truth is that most tooth loss is easily avoided. Simply brush twice a day and visit a dental professional on a regular basis, usually every six months.

For those people missing teeth, dental implants are a popular option whose technology has advanced considerably. While old practices demanded 3 months’ loss, implants can now be installed with near-emergency expediency. X-ray technology has improved to the point that oral surgeons can gain a 3-D assessment of the problem area for maximum effectiveness.
