The Pita Bread Makes Hacking Easier

Security researchers in Israel have proven that it is now possible to steal secret encryption keys using a cheap gadget that is so tiny, it can fit into a scrap of pitta bread. The team made up of four individuals, have shown that it is possible to use portable, cheap components to conceal a gadget. The researchers have illustrated the ability to trap radio emissions from laptops that accidentally leak data about the keys.

This invention by Daniel Genkin, together with his colleagues from Tel Aviv University eliminates the notion that one requires bulky and expensive equipment to grab radio signals. This gadget detects any radio signal emissions when a laptop’s central processing unit (CPU) is crunching data. A signal is monitored when the laptop is in the process of decrypting an email message received from an attacker hence, making it possible to figure out the specific key being used to secure data.

The CPU uses different power demands when carrying out different tasks. Using this feature, the team has discovered a characteristic radio pattern in computer activities like decrypting files and playing games. The team has illustrated how this attack can work in a laboratory and has developed a mobile version that can easily fit into pocket bread. This version has been nick-named the Portable Instrument for Trace Acquisition (Pita). Later in September, the team is preparing to present this invention at the cryptographic hardware technical conference.

Distance the Gadgets Can Cover

According to the researchers, the gadget operates within a 1 ft 8 inches from the computer it is supposed to tweak. The director of Logically Secure, Steve Armstrong, says that this gadget is well established due to the distance it covers. The device has greater probabilities if it is operated within 10m or 32 ft. The researchers have used a technique that can grab keys from algorithms and encryption programs to protect data. Later in September, the team is preparing to present this invention at the cryptographic hardware technical conference.
