Three-month-old Little Karl Towndrow, of Brooklyn Heights, died unexpectedly Monday, during his first day attending the Soho Child Care nursery, at 69 Greene St, according to a police spokesperson.

Towndrow was found unresponsive after a 15-minute nap session. A caretaker at the nursery performed CPR on the infant, who was then transported to Lenox Hill Hospital, around 12:15 p.m. but was later declared dead. An autopsy will be conducted by the medical examiner to establish the exact cause of death.

Amber Towndrow, the infant’s mother left him with workers at the unlicensed day care center, that is operated by Maryellen Strautmanis, according to occupancy records. Ms. Towndrow indicated that she would return to feed her son, but left a bottle of milk for day care workers to feed the infant with.

A preliminary police investigation did not indicate who was caring for the child at the time of the incident, in which 14 other children were present. Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has now initiated an inquiry surrounding the infant’s death.
